Amanda Buhse

Section: Alto

5th year in Prairie Voices

Amanda has had the opportunity to sing in various school concert, jazz and chamber choirs growing up. She has also sung with the Winnipeg Youth Chorus, Provincial Honour Choirs, barbershop quartets and church choirs. She also had the fortune of singing in many ensemble choirs for many special projects such as “The Lord of the Rings Live” and “Video Games Live” tours.

With these groups, she’s been given the opportunity to travel to great places and spaces such as Walt Disney World, Ottawa’s Parliament Hill, South Carolina, Ohio, New Brunswick, Toronto, Niagara Falls and most recently, Carnegie Hall in NYC to perform with famed composer, Eric Whitacre.

She continues to sing in Prairie Voices, now in her 5th year as well as to continue singing in Antiphony.

When she’s not singing, you’ll either find her designing stuff or spending time with fellow chorister and hubby, Jeff Buhse and playing with their dog, Pancakes :)

Aspiring: composer, gin martini connoisseur, high top sneaker collector, beard

grower, pond hockey all star, chef, photographer, vegan eater, world traveler, fashion designer, book reader, Swahili speaker, wife beater... wearer, shower singer, pencil twirler, Pringle popper, napper, eater, breather, water drinker.

In that order.

I like drinking tap water, hot showers, my own bedroom, singing, North American food, being outside past 7, my Family, my Girlfriend, driving instead of walking, internet access, air conditioning, wearing loud clothing, snow, my Friends, chapati, pineapple Fanta, paprika Pringles, teaching piano, playing football with children from Kenya, feeding Giraffes, people watching.
I could probably add 10 more tomorrow.

Not in any particular order.

I dislike bartering and converting CDN Dollars to KSH.

Barry McLoed

4th year in Prairie Voices

My name is Barry and it is my 4th year with the choir. I am looking forward to finally finishing my degree in BioChemistry and enjoying another season with Prairie Voices. When I am not singing with the choir I enjoy long walks on the beach and getting caught in the rain. So if you think you are the one for me... Oh wait wrong website. Well I hope to see you out at many of our concerts this year!

1st year in Prairie Voices

Connie is unbelievably thrilled to be joining PV this season! After singing in choirs for over a decade, missing out for four years left her in music-withdrawal and it's totally a dream come true to to get back into things with PV! Although singing has been her main musical focus she also loves playing piano and has dabbled in flute and violin. Connie is currently taking her Bachelor of Science at U of M in hopes of becoming a doctor. Between choir, school, and a few part-time jobs Connie spends any free time she gets, voluntarily cleaning up animal poop at D'arcy's ARC, chasing children around at a daycare or being fascinated by blood and guts in the VHG ER. If anyone happens to know how to add an extra day on to each week she'd really appreciate getting in on that secret! Connie long ago discovered that music is the world's best destresser and in the words of Ronald Reagan, "Life is one grand, sweet song, so start the music!"

3rd year in Prairie Voices

This is my third year in Prairie Voices.  As an aspiring music teacher, it is wonderful to be able to participate in something as musically stimulating as Prairie Voices. This year I am working full time with my husband to save up money for our world travels next fall.

Evan Hawkins

Section: Bass

1st year in Prairie Voices

Little did Evan know that when he fell in love with performing back in grade eight that he would end up with Prairie Voices.
But he is sure loving every minute of it!
When he isn't singing (which is rare) you can find him on stage or behind his computer screen, playing one of the many video games in his collection.
His range of interests is much larger than his vocal range (which isn't saying much).
Evan looks forward to a great year with everyone in Prairie Voices!

Jason Bergen

Section: Bass

1st year in Prairie Voices

Jason is very excited to sing in Prairie Voices this year and rejoin several of his friends from the Westgate Mennonite Collegiate Choirs. His favorite songs to sing are a cappella pop songs because rockin’ that bass line with his rich and delicious voice is what he was born to do. If Jason could spend a day with any celebrity he would go golfing with Michael Cera. If he could, Jason would spend every waking minute travelling the world. His theme song is “Don’t Worry Be Happy” by Bobby McFerrin because it is relaxing and works well with his procrastinating nature.

Jeff Buhse

Section: Bass

4th year in Prairie Voices

Jeff is entering his fourth year in Prairie and is excited. He’s not actually very good at singing, but his wife is an important member of the Alto section, so they let him stick around. He likes to grow facial hair (and likes when Phil grows facial hair) and likes to sing Old Man River while in the wilderness. Jeff wants to be a bison farmer/cowboy when he grows up, but can sometimes be mistaken for a lumberjack. Feel free to come say “Hi” to him at any point during the season (except during performances) and he is looking forward to performing for you and make you feel happy inside!

Sorry lads, he’s attached. He doesn’t put the slightest effort into his dress, but that is no excuse to stare ;) That wide, almost godlike range of his attracts more that just men, but cute woodland creatures as well. Joel is an active etymologist and loves harsh and exact phonology. I know, it’s pretty weird that he is actually attached with these odd pastimes… he sure got lucky. (That’s what he said). Joel is entering his second year in PV and is hoping for some GTs (good times). He especially hopes to sell you tickets to all of our concerts.

Julian Kroeker

Section: Bass

1st year in Prairie Voices

You get rid of one Kroeker and in comes another one bringing a similar demeanor and story as the other. Julian went through elementary school hating music class and mandatory piano lessons. In junior high, he took band and choir because they guaranteed good marks and included little to no effort or practice. While this was still very much the case in high school, music became something fun to break up the rest of his classes that required too much effort for little to no enjoyment. People claim to have heard him say he will take his classes at U of M this year more seriously than he did at Westgate. Regardless or wether this was actually said or if it was a result of parents' selective hearing, he will be glad to have a weekly musical release again.

4th year in Prairie Voices

This is Karin’s fourth year in Prairie Voices and she has been part of the very epic St. Vital Carpool since her first day in the choir. (This carpool has included such all-star past members as Tim Friesen, Amy Bortoluzzi, and Buffy Cowtan, to name a few). Although it has drastically decreased in core members, Karin is very excited to lead it this year and possibly induct new members into its glory. In the carpool (and in life), Karin has been known to: participate in solid jams (including singing, body percussion and even whistling), dance up a storm (even while driving), and have heart to heart talks about friendship and how Prairie Voices has changed her life.

In addition to her carpool, Karin’s enjoys: summer at her cottage and summer camp where she instructs kayaking, Christmas time, talking a lot, and drugs (because she’s a pharmacy student and is very interested in their mechanisms and safe use in the public)

1st year in Prairie Voices

Katie is so excited to part be of a choir again, especially since it's Prairie Voices! Katie will begin her second year at the University of Manitoba, working hard at getting a degree in, well, she doesn't quite know yet. Katie is one of those singers who has never sang the same part for more than a year, so let's see how soprano goes for her! Katie hopes that along with singing in Prairie Voices, she will be able to cross a few more things off her "Things To Do Before I Turn 30" list, such as running her second half marathon, taking another out of country trip with her boyfriend, and owning her own hot-air popcorn maker (because its that much better than the microwave stuff).

I have been involved in music since age four, starting on the piano, then later voice. I have been involved in many choirs over the years, including Provincial Honor Choir and Central Manitoba Youth Choir.  I am very excited to have the opportunity to sing with Prairie Voices this year.

1st year in Prairie Voices

Bonjour!

My name is Mathieu LaBossière and I am very happy do be part of Prairie Voices this year for the first time!! I'm very excited to undertake this challenge as this is my first experience in vocal music. I have done a lot of music in the past, especially playing percussion and piano in band and Jazz band at Collège Louis-Riel during my high school years. Since I got in university, I realized that music had been absent of my life for already way too long.. so here I am!

This year I will be completing my Bachelor's Degree in General Sciences at Collège Universitaire de Saint-Boniface in hopes of being accepted in Med School next year. In the mean time, I am looking foreward to this year ahead with this twist that will be PV!! After all, nothing is better than music, and I can't wait to share this passion of mine with the rest of the gang!
